This large scale civic building was intended as both an economic generator for the City of Durham and a means to facilitate art and culture. The project is set in the American Tobacco Historic District, a ten acre, mixed-use development that includes multi-family housing, upscale retailing, and premium office space. DPAC’s 2,800-seat multi-use auditorium was designed primarily for large scale touring productions and headliner acts. It also serves as a stage for Duke University’s celebrated American Dance Festival. As an indicator of its success, the award-winning project has generated substantial income since its opening and, in 2015, both Pollstar Magazine and Venues Today ranked it No. 2 of the most highly attended theatres in America.
