Chesapeake Shakespeare Theatre
Baltimore’s 1885 Mercantile Trust Building has been reinvented as a vibrant cultural center. The 250-seat venue is a modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, combining the intimacy of the classic playhouse with contemporary design and function. A freestanding steel framework set within the historic volume delineates the performance space and supports three transparent tiers of seating wrapped around a thrust stage. Performance technologies are carefully integrated into the new structure to minimize impact to the Romanesque-revival architecture and ornate coffered ceiling.
